So far my classroom ning has not been as successful as I had hoped. I really thought my students would take to it and write volumes about what they were doing and why they were doing it. But the reality is that they just didn't - and their output and reflections were much the same as when we just used notepad.
They have now started on their first major project and so I am hoping they will be more inclined to diarise their progress. Of course, I will need to encourage them by providing some more scaffolding.
One of the problems I have come across is that I left the students with the ability to add sound and video - a couple of them decided to use this a way to watch music and waste time. I have not taken this ability off them and, after a few serious discussions about their resposibilities, they now appear to be keeping on task.
The other problem I am having is just getting the time to use the ning - with most of my course on our student intranet, there are just not enought opportuniteis to post material for them on the ning to warrant them to constantly check the site.
Still, it is early days. The research project should be where it is used the most.
