I'm 48 years old. I've been teaching about 17 years. But I have taken time out during that to be the home-parent to raise our boys. Our youngest is going into pre-primary in 2008, so I'm likely to have more time to teach in the years ahead.
I job share. My job share partner and i will be 0.8 FTE this year. We dropped a class to give an incoming teacher 1.0. The school is expanding and we will go back up to 1.0 in 2009. As a job share we could feasibly go as high as 1.4 but I don't think we want that.
I teach middle school maths. I resonate with middles school. My wife teacher senior school physics. She resonates with senior school.
Why do I want us to get into these technologies? Coz I want us to keep pace with change in our society so that we can remain effective educators. Already kids have to time warp to come into schools. That's hardly a good way to educate. Unless, maybe, you think that education is about producing docile and co-operative citizens. I don't. I think education is about human flourishing.
I'm fairly new to teaching. I spent far too many years in the IT industry before "retiring" and joining the teaching profession. I was best known as the Managing Director of Byronics and as the developper of one of Australia's leading ERP packages widely used in the manufacturing sector. I was vice chairman of the Software Industries Association, vice president of the Australian Production and Inventory Control Association, President of the Ingres Users Group, a committee member of the Electronic and Information Industries Association, as well as a few other things you would never have heard of.
Exactly 20 years after I set up Byronics, I left and have now joined the ranks of the teaching profession. I have been masquarading as a science teacher, but have been asked to teach Computer Science and Applied Information Systems this year.
I am married and have three children ranging from 7 years old through to 26 years old. I also have three grand-children ranging from four years old down to one year. My fourth is expected in February.
